# Starting the 3di

Use the shortcut on your Desktop called 3di5\_run**.** Alternatively, run the corresponding entry also named 3di5\_run in the Start menu.

The **3di** will open displaying the [Main Menu](/using-the-software/the-main-menu.md):

When you first use the **3di**, the system may not be linked to a [backend](/using-the-software/frontend-and-backends.md) for data storage. If the Main Menu indicates *no backend*, then to get started you will need to [select](/using-the-software/the-main-menu.md#select-and-open-backend) an existing backend or [create](/using-the-software/the-main-menu.md#create-and-open-backend) a first backend for your own use.

Once a backend is in place, you can open the [Case Manager](/using-the-software/starting-an-interview.md#open-the-case-manager) and proceed to enter and interview a patient.

## The 3di toolbar

The 3di toolbar appears on the *Add-ins* tab of the Access ribbon at the top of the screen. This is how you navigate the main parts of the software.

The buttons on the toolbar are illustrated and explained in the following pages.

To free up more space on screen, the ribbon can be set to automatically hide. Double-click the tab title where it says *Add-ins*. Double-click again to bring it back. Alternatively you can achieve the same thing via the menu which appears after you click the arrow icon in the bottom right corner of the ribbon.

### Tidy up the ribbon

Furthermore, you can edit the ribbon so that only the relevant 3di buttons are shown, as in the above screenshot. This only needs to be done once and we follow these steps on the training course. If you wish to repeat this in future, the steps are as follows:

1. Right-click anywhere on the ribbon and click 'Customise the Ribbon...'

2. On the right-hand side of the dialog, unselect every tab *except* the one called 'Add-ins', then click OK.
