Installing different versions in parallel

When you install the 3di, by default an installation folder is created on your desktop containing the 3di program (frontend) and also the Backends folder which stores your interview data and reports. This is explained in Frontend and backends.

The name of the installation folder contains the 3di version number. Therefore it is possible and completely reasonable to install two 3di versions in parallel. By default, each will use its own local Backends folder, so your cases will not be shared between the versions. Our recommended approach is to create a new backend in the Backends folder of the new version and use that for new cases, while retaining the old 3di installation for when you want to revisit past cases.

Using backends from an earlier version

Due to changes in interview content and scoring, we do not recommend that you load a backend from an older version into a newer version of the 3di frontend. Normally this is not necessary because you can simply load older cases in the previous frontend version if you need to revisit them. However, if you do need to do this, such as when dealing with historic research datasets, please contact us ([email protected]envelope).
